There are certain questions we get asked routinely, and these are repeated here with answers we know you’ll find helpful.  Have a question of your own?  Send it to us now, and we’ll answer you directly.

1. What does SEER Rating stand for, and how can I tell a positive from a not-so-positive rating?

SEER stands for "Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio.” The higher the rating, the more energy efficient the system. Older air conditioning systems have SEER ratings as low as 5 or 6.Today, the minimum rating to earn Energy Star qualification is 13, while some systems offer up to 23 SEER.

2. What are the most important question to ask to make sure I’m choosing the right contractor to install, maintain, and repair my central air conditioning and heating systems?

There are numerous factors that should impact your decision. First, you want a contactor that is licensed, insured, and has verifiable references. Check out their Better Business Bureau rating, and ask if they offer 24/7 service. Also, make sure you’re comfortable having their employees inside your home.

3. I've had my present central air conditioning system for 15 years. Should I be thinking about replacing it and, if so, why?

According to EnergyStar.gov, you should think about replacing your current system if it’s at least ten years old. Are your repair costs and utility bills climbing? Are some rooms too hot or too cold? You should also consider system replacement if your home has excessive dust or it’s too dry.

4. Does central air conditioning provide benefits beyond just keeping us cool?

There are numerous health benefits associated with central AC. Air filtration and humidity control, for example, provide cleaner and healthier air. That’s especially important for allergy and asthma sufferers. A well-maintained system also means lower energy bills. Plus, in the heat of Arizona, central air is often a health necessity.

5. I understand that all air conditioning systems built and sold after July 1, 2010 do not run on freon for environmental reasons. But since my current system was purchased before the cutoff date, what can I do to minimize damage to the ozone layer?

If your system runs on R-22 (freon), you should have it professionally inspected and maintained once a year. Also, ask your technician to locate and repair leaks to prevent more freon (which contains chlorine) from escaping into the atmosphere. Many new systems run on R-410A, a cleaner and safer alternative.

6. What is NATE certification, and why is that important to me?

NATE, which stands for North American Technician Excellence, is an independent, not-for-profit organization that promotes technical and professional excellence and recognizes high quality industry technicians through voluntary testing and certification. Our technicians are NATE certified and have achieved that status through long hours of study. and highly demanding tests.

7. I've heard that bigger is better when it comes to buying a new unit. Is that true?

An air conditioner that’s too small causes in high energy bills since it must run longer to cool your home. A system that’s too large cycles (turns on and off) too often, resulting which in less consistent temperatures and more wear and tear on the compressor and other component parts.

8. There are different kinds of indoor air purifying devices and systems. How do I know which is right for me?

First you should decide what exactly you want the purifier to accomplish, and whether you need a whole-house or single-room model. Most air purifiers use carbon filters to remove odors, mold, dust mites, chemicals, and more. Make sure the filter you chooseremoves the odors and doesn’t just mask them.

9. On average, what percentage of my total energy bill goes to cooling and heating my home?

Up to 65% of your energy consumption goes to heating and cooling your home. But there are several things you can do to reduce your costs…by up to 30%. These include frequently replacing your filter, scheduling routine maintenance, installing programmable thermostats, and sealing cracks and leaks in your duct work.

10. Does it matter who installs my air conditioning system, and why?

When your new heating and cooling equipment is installed to meet ENERGY STAR Quality Installation Guidelines, you’ll enjoy added comfort and energy savings up to 30%. Top installers will correctly size your system, connect it to well-sealed ducts, ensure sufficient airflow, and charge it with the right amount of refrigerant.
