How Your Thermostat Affects Your Heating

How Your Thermostat Affects Your Heating

Your heating system (and your air conditioning system too, for that matter) is usually controlled by a thermostat: the little control panel on your wall that helps you regulate the temperature in your home. Thermostats largely employ digital technology, which can let you program specific times for it to turn on and off (among other things). Because your thermostat allows you to control your heat, it can wreak havoc when problems arise with it. Here’s how your thermostat affects your heating.

A thermostat uses a bi-laminated metal strip (a strip composed of two different types of metal) to detect the changes in temperature in the room. Metal expands and contracts with temperature changes, and the two types of metal expand and contract at different rates which can be measured to determine the right omen to turn on the heat. The strip itself is coiled; a temperature adjustment lever sits in the center and a mercury switch sits on the end. When the coil winds to a certain level determined by the lever, it tips the switch and starts the heating process. When the strip unwinds to a certain level, it trips the level back and halts the heating process.

Many thermostats also use a heat anticipator, which shuts the heater off just before the proper temperature is reached. This helps the thermostat be more accurate, since the anticipator allows the remaining hot air in your ducts to reach its location without going over the assigned temperature.

Needless to say, if one of these components is faulty, the entire heating system can be affected. If the thermostat misreads the temperature, it will turn the heater on and off at inappropriate times, while damage to the switch or lever will prevent the heat from turning on or off at all. The bad news is that the thermostat usually needs to be replaced in such circumstances. The good news is that a trained technician can do so fairly quickly, without a lot of fuss and bother. Johns Refrigeration can advise you on how your thermostat affects your heating, and perform repairs or replace the unit with courtesy and professionalism.
