5 Ways to Make Every Day Earth Day in Gilbert Arizona

Tuesday, April 29th, 2014

Even though Earth Day was last week, Gilbert Arizona is a great place to make every day Earth Day. From the 350+ days of sunshine to the hiking trails, there are opportunities to enjoy the outdoors year round. Being in the desert makes us more conscious of our water use – or it should – and we can all save a little on summer utility bills while helping the environment.

Here are five ways to make every day Earth Day in Gilbert Arizona:

  1. Go outside. There’s nothing better than the sun shining on your face. Enjoy the outdoors by taking a walk with a friend or play outside with your family. Take advantage of the near-perfect weather we have here in Arizona!
  2. Use less water. Turn the tap off when you’re brushing your teeth. It saves as much as four gallons a minute!
  3. Save electricity. Turn off lights when you leave the room. Cover south facing windows. They get the most sun throughout the year, heating up your home, and causing the A/C to run non-stop.
  4. Use reusable grocery bags. The average family visits the grocery store more than once a week. That makes for a lot of plastic and paper bags going to the landfill. Opt instead for reusable bags and make it ZERO bags going to the landfill.
  5. Hang clothes outside. There’s almost nothing better than the smell of clean sheets. Hanging clothes and linens outside saves the energy you would spend using the clothes dryer. And in Arizona, laundry doesn’t take long to dry!

Imagine how great a world it would be if we each made one small change to make every day Earth Day! If you’d like to learn about even more ways to save energy and money, read our blog, 10 Ways to Save Energy in Your Home.

What Are Some Signs That I May Need a New Air Conditioning System?

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014

If you require new air conditioning installation, now is the ideal time of the year to have the work done. You’ll have your new system humming away at keeping you cool in time to keep back the Arizona summer heat. Just make a call to Johns Refrigeration and tell our skilled technicians that you want new air conditioning system installation in Gilbert, AZ, and we’ll help you find the right AC to replace your old one.

However, you may feel unsure if you need to have a new AC. Replacing an air conditioner is a large task, and sometimes targeted repairs are a less expensive option. We’ll look at signs that usually indicate when repairs are no longer the best choice and it’s time to replace.

Signs it’s time to retire that old air conditioner

  • Rising repair costs: How much is too much when it comes to repairing an air conditioner? Take some time to look over the last two years of repair bills for your AC (cooling systems tend to need the most repairs during their last two years of operation). Add them up. If you discover that it takes more than $500 in repairs per year to keep your AC running, then it’s no longer worth the cost of maintaining the system and you should look into new installation.
  • Reduced cooling power: If the summer comfort in your home just isn’t what it used to be, you should take into account the age of the air conditioner. The life expectancy of most AC systems is 10–15 years; check the cabinet or the manual to find out the estimate for your system. If your air conditioner has reached this age and you notice a drop in cooling power, then it’s time for a replacement.
  • Increased operating costs: You may not need numerous repairs for your air conditioner, but an old one can still cost you extra money through inefficient operation. Examine your electric bills for the past two years to see if you spot a noticeable rise due to the AC. If you’ve kept up regular maintenance on the system but operating costs continue to rise, then the air conditioner has probably reached the point of no return and needs to retire.

A professional second opinion

You do not need to make the choice of “replace or repair” on your own. Call a skilled HVAC repair technician to examine the system and give you an honest opinion on how much longer it will last and what you can expect to pay to keep it running. If it turns out that replacement is the most economical option, the technician will help you select a new system and schedule the installation work.

At Johns Refrigeration, our family-run business has helped customers since 1970 keep cool. Look to us when you need information about air conditioning installation in Gilbert, AZ and whether it’s time for you to replace your old system.

What to Look for with Your Heating Installation Service

Monday, March 31st, 2014

Installing a new heater can be a big undertaking, both in terms of the investment involved and in the changes it will make to your house. A new heater can erase many of the problems an old heater suffers from, as well as giving you a chance to enjoy more reliable heat at improved monthly rates.

But the best way to ensure a clean and reliable new furnace is to hire the right heating service to install it. Here in Gilbert, heating installation services are quite numerous, so how are you to tell the good services from the bad?

Here’s a few general guidelines that can tell you what to look for with your heating installation service.

  • Accreditation. The best and most reliable sign of a quality heating service is endorsements and affiliations with reputable third parties. This can include the Better Business Bureau, the local Chamber of Commerce and specialized institutions like NATE (North American Technician Excellence), which gauge technician’s know-how in various technical fields. Good word of mouth helps too, but serious accreditations are a real stamp of approval when seeking the right service.
  • Longevity. A newly established company isn’t necessarily a bad one. Indeed, many can be quite good and every company was newly established at some point. But the more recently a company began, the more of a risk you’re taking in terms of quality. A company with a long history and successful track record means a long line of happy customers and reliability you can count on.
  • Service. When looking for a good heating service, you want to emphasize the “service” part of the equation. Does the company offer warranties or similar guarantees? Does it have 24-hour service to treat emergencies? Does it offer estimates before work starts so that you know what’s involved? These are signs of a professional organization that wants your business, and one you can presumably count on to do the job right.

Here in Gilbert, heating installation can be provided by John’s Refrigeration with an absolute assurance of quality. We’ve been in business since 1970, we offer emergency service and free estimates, and we proudly display accreditation with NATE, the BBB and the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce.

If you know what to look for with your heating installation service, you don’t need to look any further. Give us a call and set up an appointment today!

Clothing Drive Fundraiser for Gilbert Charity

Friday, January 17th, 2014

Being a business in Gilbert for 44 years means having a responsibility to our community. At John’s Refrigeration, we consider it our honor to be active in improving the Gilbert community. As part of this responsibility, Andrew John and his Gilbert Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class are raising money for the Page Commons Senior Housing Development garden restoration project and invite you to help.

The Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class is a diverse group of individuals who learn about Gilbert’s government, social services, and local business so that they may become stronger community leaders. This year’s class has selected Page Commons Senior Housing, a development of 100 affordable apartments in Gilbert, as the beneficiary of their class fundraising project. With the proceeds, the senior housing development will restore their gardens just in time for spring!

Here’s how you can help. We will be collecting:

  • Used Clothes, including Shoes, Belts, and Hats—even Socks!
  • Bedding such as Pillows, Comforters, and Linens
  • Towels
  • Backpacks and Purses
  • Draperies
  • Stuffed Animals

It’s the perfect time to lighten the load, get a head start on your spring-cleaning, and contribute to this terrific cause.

What happens to the items collected? Clothing Cycle pays for every pound you bring in. Textiles are turned into useable secondhand clothing or become wiping rags for commercial and industrial use. Some items are recycled into fibers to make everyday products like carpet padding, upholstery, and insulation.

Drop off your used household items at the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce on January 25th from 8 AM to 2 PM.

Cash prize for the person who brings in the most pounds! Everyone who brings over 50 pounds gets a chance at having a pizza party with former Arizona Cardinals players!
