Mesa Arizona is a Tree City USA Community

Friday, April 25th, 2014

We are pleased to be part of the Mesa Arizona community for many reasons, including that they have been named a Tree City USA Community by the Arbor Day Foundation.

What is Arbor Day?

Arbor Day was established in April 1872 by J. Sterling Morton, a Nebraska journalist and politician. He felt Nebraska’s landscape and economy would benefit from the planting of trees. Today, all 50 states, as well as many countries around the globe, celebrate Arbor Day by planting trees and educating people on the uses of trees.

How is Mesa Arizona, a Tree City US Community, celebrating Arbor Day?

This year, we celebrate Arbor Day on April 25th. As a Tree City USA, Mesa has the ability to improve community urban forests and educate on the importance of trees for communities and the environment. Join neighbors at 9:30am on Arbor Day at the Botanical Walk at 9320 E. McKellips Rd., where Zaharis Elementary students will assist in the planting of trees.

Needs Addressed by Commercial Air Conditioning Systems

Wednesday, April 16th, 2014

Air conditioning a commercial space isn’t like cooling down a home. Although commercial air conditioning equipment uses similar technology to those found in private houses, the scale and power required makes them very different from the point of view of installation, maintenance, and repairs.

For a city like Mesa, where summer temperatures range in the mid-90s and the average high for the year is 86°F, proper air conditioning is critical for a work environment. We’ll look at what needs an effective commercial AC addresses in a business. For the assistance you need for commercial air conditioning in Mesa, AZ, contact Johns Refrigeration. We’ve kept the Valley of the Sun cool since 1970.

The necessity of commercial air conditioners

  • Better worker productivity: No matter the sort of business you run, you will have employees. Employees require a comfortable space to do their job, and nothing cuts into their productivity faster than a hot, damp, uncomfortable environment. It’s distracting and causes extra exertion leading to fatigue and mistakes. With the right AC keeping the workplace cool, you’ll have happier and more productive employees.
  • Content customers and clients: For businesses that see an influx of customers or clients, whether you run a store or a firm, it’s important to maintain a comfortable temperature level for them. Shoppers will quickly leave a store that feels too warm, and potential clients will start to connect negative feelings about their comfort with their feelings about the company they wish to hire. Professional air conditioning services will keep the people who support your business happy to keep supporting it.
  • A better bottom line: Having productive employees and content customers will certainly lead to a stronger bottom line for your company. But professionally installed and maintained commercial ACs will help the bottom line in other ways: reduced repair needs and greater energy efficient performance. A poorly installed system, or one that doesn’t receive regular maintenance, will quickly cause problems that will need expensive repairs. It will likely drain power as well and raise your bills. A commercial air conditioning system with professional work will save you money in the long run.

For your commercial air conditioners under 20 tons, look to Johns Refrigeration for installation, repairs, replacement, and maintenance—all done with the quality you expect to keep your company successful. We can handle air conditioning in Mesa, AZ for many types of businesses. (And if you need AC work for your home… well, we can do that too.)

Are You Getting Ready to Turn on Your Cooling System?

Friday, April 4th, 2014

Right now, spring is treating us to warm and pleasant weather in Mesa, AZ. You may have already turned on your home’s cooling system, whether switching the heat pump to “cool” or activating the central air conditioner, for a few days. However, the real heat is lurking right around the corner, and that’s when your air conditioning will truly begin to earn it keep for the year.

Summers in the Valley of the Sun can turn brutal. We have some tips from HVAC experts to help make your transition into full-bore air conditioning mode go with as few troubles as possible.

Johns Refrigeration is here to help you switch to the summer heat. We have a maintenance program to prepare your system, and offer air conditioning repairs in Mesa, AZ for those times when the best preparations can’t stop malfunctions.

Here are a few things to consider before your AC comes on for the season

  • Schedule regular maintenance: You should always have a maintenance technician inspect your air conditioning and give it a tune-up once a year, and spring is the best time to have the work done so the system will be in top condition for the summer heat. An air conditioner running at its best will also operate without cost overruns, keeping your electric bill from making abrupt spikes.
  • Handle any repair needs: A maintenance check will identify places where you air conditioner should have repairs done before turning on for the season. You may already know about possible malfunctions because of unusual behavior from the unit (strange noises, a drop in airflow). Don’t procrastinate about scheduling the work to fix these problems: getting trapped in the summer heat waiting for repairs for a broken unit is no fun.
  • Change the air filter: This is a part of air conditioner and heat pump maintenance you can do on your own. The air filter that protects the inside of the system from damage will develop dirt and dust clogs while it works, and unless it’s changed regularly for a clean filter, it will start to cut off airflow and permit particles to enter the cabinet. During cooling season, you should change the filter once a month.

Start with maintenance

An annual maintenance program is the best way to protect your home’s cooling (as well as your budget). Call Johns Refrigeration and join our Peak Performance Club. Membership grants you priority scheduling and special discounts. You can select different levels of membership depending on your needs and budget.

Make sure you enjoy a cool summer in Mesa, AZ with air conditioning repair and maintenance from Johns Refrigeration.

3 Factors to Consider with Air Conditioning Installation

Tuesday, April 1st, 2014

A new air conditioner is a significant investment in your home, but as your old one slowly breaks down, it may be time to think of a new one. Spring is here and the cooling season is fast approaching. Now is the time to get rid of a wasteful or inefficient system in favor of one that can lower your cooling bills significantly once it’s installed. Here in Mesa, air conditioning installation services will be happy to put a new unit into your home. As with any purchase of this size, however, you need to prepare things properly before pulling the trigger.

Here are 3 factors to consider with air conditioning installation.

  • Sizing the unit. Air conditioners need to have enough power to cool your entire home, but not so much that they cycle on and off multiple times throughout the day. (Cycling is very hard on the unit and costs you wasted energy). Sizing it properly means factoring in the square footage of your home, as well as the presence of insulation and more nebulous factors like sunlight exposure. A trained technician can inspect your home and perform the proper calculations for you.
  • Getting an efficient unit. Air conditioning efficiency is measured in SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) ratings, detailing how effective the unit is at doing its job. The higher the rating, the more effective the air conditioner, and less it will cost in monthly fees to properly cool the house. Look for units with the highest SEER rating in you price bracket; the monthly savings they provide will help offset the cost of installation.
  • Adding bells and whistles. If you’re in the market for upgrades, you might think about adding a heat pump (which combines the duties of a heater and an air conditioner) rather than a more traditional air conditioning unit., You might also consider a zone control system, either installed into your existing ducts or added as part of a mini ductless split system. This is a good time to consider such changes, since they’re easier during the installation stage.

For more factors to consider with air conditioning installation here in Mesa, give Johns Refrigeration a call. We have the tools and experience to do the job right and we’ll give it our all to deliver the air conditioner you need.

Don’t Let Heating Repairs Wait

Wednesday, March 19th, 2014

Winter is starting to wind down, and your heater is likely to feel a lot less pressure to perform in the coming weeks. Here in Mesa, heating repair services are kept quite busy handling breakdowns and other emergencies while people’s heaters were running every day. As the temperatures warm up, those crises will slowly abate, which ironically means it’s a great time to deal with lingering heating issues that you’ve been able to put off before now. Don’t let heating repairs wait, especially with the summer season on its way.

The biggest reason is the one already intimated above: as the need for emergency repairs abate, you have the flexibility and luxury to schedule repairs at your leisure. A breakdown in the middle of heating season basically puts you at the mercy of the weather, since you need to get it fixed before things get too cold in your house. With temperatures warming, you can afford to put your heater on hold during the time it takes to get it fixed, which means you can set up a schedule that works well with your busy life.

Furthermore, the longer you let heating repairs wait, the greater the chances of your heater experiencing a more serious breakdown. Dirt and dust accumulate over the summer, increasing friction during those periods when you need to use the heater and generally contributing to overall wear and tear. Even if you don’t use the heater at all over the summer, the neglect could exacerbate the problem, making or a more costly repair when the time comes to finally deal with it. Getting the issue taken care of sooner can avoid all of that, and ensure that your heater is in good shape next season without you having to be concerned.

If you live in Mesa, heating repair is inevitable, and the spring makes the perfect time to address it in a flexible and responsible manner. Don’t let heating repairs wait. Call the Mesa. AZ heating repair experts at Johns Refrigeration to schedule a session today. Our trained staff is dedicated to your complete satisfaction and we’ll get your heating back into shape as quickly as possible!

Causes of Duct Cleaning Calls in Mesa

Wednesday, March 5th, 2014

For the cleanliness of your home, efficiency of your heating and cooling system, and quality of your indoor air, you need to have a clean ductwork system. Contamination inside ducts can consist of dust, dirt, debris from construction, dander, pollen, hair, mold, and mildew. Removal such a variety of pollutants requires more than a long-handled broom and a bottle of cleaner. Duct cleaning requires special training and professional equipment. When you need duct cleaning in Mesa, AZ, call Johns Refrigeration and talk to our air quality specialists today.

You should schedule duct cleaning every one or two years, depending on how rapidly build-up develops inside your ventilation system. Here are some causes for contamination to begin to accumulate and lead to the need for duct cleaning.

  • Ductwork breaks and gaps: Dust will gradually begin to build up inside ducts, but it can take over a year for this to become thick enough that it will cause trouble. But if your ducts have breaks in them from corrosion, damage, or poor sealing due to improper installation, dust and other outside debris will rapidly start to infiltrate the ventilation system. Not only will you need to schedule cleaning, you will also need repairs to seal the breaks.
  • Clogged air filters: Neglecting to regularly change the air filters in the ventilation system will cause the filter to clog and dust to begin to get through. The air filter should be changed once a month during periods when your HVAC system is working regularly.
  • Time: You simply can’t avoid some debris entering the ventilation system, and because the ducts are sealed along their length to maintain air pressure, this contamination will continue to grow over time. According to the NADCA (National Air Duct Cleaners Association), in a typical six-room home, up to 40 pounds of dust is created each year through everyday living, and this contaminated air circulates through your home 5 to 7 times a day. No matter how clean your home, no matter how strong your ducts, contamination will get inside it and eventually require cleaning.

If you’ve never had your ducts cleaned before, you should schedule it right away. Find out from your professional cleaning technicians how often you should have the service in the future, since they will have a solid idea of how much contamination your ducts will gather each year. Get into a habit of regular duct cleaning visits: you deserve to have the healthiest air in your home.

Johns Refrigeration has the Mesa, AZ duct cleaning team that can take care of you.

3 Causes of Heating Repair in AZ

Thursday, February 27th, 2014

If you’ve lived in Arizona for more than a year, you know that it isn’t always sunny and pleasant here. The winter months can bring some chilly nights. A properly working home heating system is essential for your year-round comfort. When your heater starts to show signs of a malfunction, you need to call forprofessional heating repair service in Mesa, AZ before you lose your toasty warm home.

Johns Refrigeration has worked on heaters in Arizona since 1970, and we have experience with how heating systems can become damaged and require repair. Here are three of the main reasons that a heater might need to have professional attention to get it working right again:

  1. Dirty heat pump coils: During the heating season, the outdoor unit of your heat pump operates as an evaporator, absorbing heat and then moving it indoors. If the coils begin to become dirty—which is common if the area around the outdoor unit isn’t properly cleared—it will block the heat absorption. This leads to icing along the coil, which will further block the heat absorption and could cause the heat pump to completely lose the ability to provide you with heating. Call for professionals to remove the coils and clean them. (Just scraping off the ice isn’t enough.)
  2. Clogged air filters: The dry and dusty desert air of Arizona means a lot of little particles can end up drawn into your heating system’s ventilation shafts. An air filter is positioned to catch these contaminants, but if the filter is not changed out regularly, it will start to allow debris to get inside your furnace or heat pump and cause damage to the components that will require repairs. Make sure you change your air filter once a month.
  3. Lack of regular maintenance: Your heater, no matter its type or age, should have heating maintenance done once a year. Fall is the usual time, but you can schedule during any season if you have neglected it for more than a year. A heater without maintenance will be prone to breakdowns as its parts wear down and suffer damage. With regular maintenance, the unit with receive the cleaning, tune-ups, and replacements necessary to keep repairs away.

You can never make your heating system 100% repair-proof—complex machinery is always at risk of a malfunction—but you can avoid the majority of repairs your system may need with the proper care and attention. Contact Johns Refrigeration to sign up for our maintenance plan so you can avoid future repairs. But should you need heating repair in Mesa, AZ, you can count on us to bring you the quality work to get the job done right.
