John’s Refrigeration is changing the way you think about HVAC and your home. The system to heat and cool your home is really not about the unit outside – or as we like to call it, the box. The system includes the ductwork and air filter, which, when not properly sized and sealed, can cause dust, pollen, and other contaminants to enter your home, making the unit less efficient and you less comfortable.
How do air filters work?
The air that flows through your home goes through a filter before it enters the HVAC system, making it important to have the right size and kind of air filter. When the filter is clogged, the air in your home filters through those contaminants as well, blowing the dust and dirt back into your home.
A filter is important, not just to protect you from contaminants in the home, but to also protect your air conditioning and heating unit from damage. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reports changing your home’s air filter as the most important part of maintaining your home and making the HVAC system efficient.
Sizing Air Filters and Ductwork
Filters that aren’t sized properly, including the newest on the market, can actually make your system less efficient by blocking airflow. This causes the entire system to work harder and use more energy. That translates into a higher utility bill for you.
The same holds true when ductwork isn’t sized and sealed properly. Your home breathes just like you do. When it’s not operating efficiently, it’s like it’s having an asthma attack; working harder for the same output.
The role of filtration is to protect the coil, not filter air around the house. In some cases, the solution for an asthmatic system is to use a basic (cheap) blue air filter that keeps the airflow at an efficient rate. Other solutions include having the ductwork evaluated to make sure it is sized and sealed properly so that dust and other contaminants are not entering the home.
