Why get a home energy audit?

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016

If you want to maximize the comfort of your home and make sure it runs efficiently, you may want to consider a home energy audit in Scottsdale, AZ or the Phoenix metro area.

The energy audit is important because it assesses how much energy your home uses and breaks it down by area. Is the air running properly through the ducts? Is there enough insulation? There are many facets of energy use that go unnoticed when living in the desert climate and a home energy audit in Scottsdale, AZ can help you figure out how energy efficient your house is. It’s easy to assume that the majority of wasted energy results from running your air conditioning system during our scorching summers. But that’s not always the case! It can be because of window and door frame cracks. It can also be leaks coming from the duct work or the result of an older furnace or thermostat that’s causing the heating and cooling system in your house to work harder than it should.

A home energy audit will check every nook and cranny of your house so you don’t have to worry about where you’re losing energy and money. John’s Refrigeration runs blower door and air hood tests and uses an infrared camera and smoke sticks during the evaluation process to ensure the most accurate findings. The team inspects the home’s ductwork, attic, A/C, heating, lighting, and appliance usage. You would be surprised at how much one deficient factor affects the entire efficiency of a house!

Once the audit is complete, the team will outline where in your home it’s most valuable and necessary to make improvements. Then you can determine which (if not all) adjustments are feasible for your household and budget. Sometimes changes require updates to the heating and cooling system, and sometimes efficiency can be improved by how appliances are used. An energy audit will make you aware of your energy use, which is the first step in creating an energy efficient home.

Contact John’s Refrigeration to learn more about energy efficiency and to schedule an energy audit for your home.

How to Replace a Thermostat: What to Ask Before You Buy

Tuesday, November 24th, 2015

The thermostat is one of the most important elements of your home heating and air conditioning system. Before you rush out to replace or upgrade your thermostat here’s what you need to know prior to buying:

Thermostat options

Deciding on the best thermostat option for your home involves a number of factors, such as your energy goals and budget. Here is a list of the types of thermostats available and found in most homes:

Digital

Digital thermostats are typically installed in newer homes, instead of the older manual thermostats. The digital thermostat has an easy-to-read digital display with large buttons that allow exact temperature control.

Programmable

Just as the name suggests, programmable thermostats allow you to program and set specific times for the air or heat to turn on and off.

Wi-Fi Enabled

If you are energy conscious and want the maximum amount of control from your thermostat, then a Wi-Fi enabled option is best for you. These products are often part of a bigger home automation system or allow you the option to buy related products from the line and link them together through an app that can be controlled from a smartphone or tablet. Wi-Fi thermostats are great for the business traveler or if you own a rental property. It’s simple to access the app and easily turn off the heat or air no matter where you are.

The Benefits of Home Automation

Home automation is the way of the future for homeowners. The benefits of home automation are far-reaching. Apart from saving you money, which is often the number one factor for the homeowner, automation offers peace of mind and convenience. Having the ability to adjust the temperature in your home for optimum comfort is a nice luxury also. Heat Pump vs Furnace: What’s the Difference?

Wednesday, November 18th, 2015

In many cases, the decision to install a heat pump or a furnace is largely dependent on whether your house uses natural gas or electricity to heat the home. Although there are a variety of furnace models on the market that offer electric, gas, and propane options. Don’t just huddle under a blanket, stay warm with a heat pump or a furnace.

The furnace is one of the most common heating systems found in homes throughout the U.S. because of its reliability, efficiency, and durability. While the East Valley gets its share of cool days and nights during the winter months when the furnace will be operating, much of the country experiences a more seasonal climate. When it comes to deciding to install a furnace in your home, a number of factors come into play, including local utilities; is your neighborhood within the parameters of a gas line/service area? Other factors include the actual building structure of your home and how it’s configured. It’s important to know the differences and what each system offers so you can ask the right questions in order to help with a smooth installation.

At John’s, our technicians are certified and able to answer your questions every step of the way. We’ll make the initial calculations to help find the right size furnace to effectively heat your home. Once we have established what model to install in your home, we will begin the process. Then, 60 days after an installation is complete, we return for an inspection, as promised in our guarantee.

Heat pumps do an excellent job in more temperate climates, as they provide both heating and cooling in one convenient systemHeat pumps are one of the most efficient HVAC systems on the market, making them an attractive option to many homeowners looking to reduce energy usage and costs. A heat pump uses electricity to heat and cool your home and they are typically found in many homes in Arizona.

Installing or replacing a heat pump in your home is not a small decision. You will live with it for many years, so you want to be certain that it provides an efficient way to heat and cool your home. One of the most common causes of heat pump issues is poor installation. There are many different components involved to ensure the system runs like clockwork. At John’s, we go the extra mile and take a whole-house approach to make sure your heat pump operates efficiently with the ductwork and structure of your home.

It is our responsibility to provide 100 percent customer satisfaction and we proudly carry an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, so you know you’re in good hands when you call on John’s. We also offer a money-back guarantee on new installations and replacements. If you aren’t happy with the performance of the system we installed – or the service within the first year – you can call us to remove the unit free of charge.

If you still have questions about the differences of both the furnace and heat pump, contact John’s; we’re here 25 hours a day, 8 days a week and are happy to address any of your heating concerns.

Keep Your A/C System Properly Maintained During Monsoon

Tuesday, September 1st, 2015

Watch out for dust in your a/c

During monsoondirt, dust and other debris can easily clog up your home’s a/c system, which reduces airflow through the coils, as well as causes premature corrosion of your condenser coil. This reduction in airflow prevents the unit’s ability to transfer heat between your home and the outdoor air. A damaged a/c unit also uses much more energy trying to cool down your home, which leads to higher utility bills.

High winds, lightning, and thunderstorms during monsoon can wreak havoc on your a/c system. But taking a few steps to protect your a/c unit will better prepare it to weather monsoon and will also help protect your safety and comfort.

Here are a few things you can do now:

• Trim trees from around the air conditioner: Most damage that is done to a/c units during monsoon is due to falling trees and branches that can either become embedded inside the unit, clogging it up, or debris falling on it, damaging the unit.
• Install a whole-house surge protector: Electrical damage is a huge potential risk during monsoon. A whole-house surge protector ensures your system keeps running even during storms.
• Clear your condensate drain line: A clogged condensate drain can lead to many problems in a home’s a/c system, so keeping it open can prevent costly repairs.
• Change your air conditioner’s air filter: Changing the air filter every month keeps the system running more efficiently. If it’s a particularly dusty monsoon, consider changing the filter more often.

And while you might be tempted to simply cover your home’s outside unit, keep in mind that you should never cover it with a tarp or a plastic bag. Covering your a/c unit not only keeps the moisture in the unit, but also makes it more difficult for your unit to breathe while it’s running.

John’s Refrigeration can help make sure your air conditioning system continues running during monsoon, as well as after the dust storms and rains have passed. Just Call John’s to find out how we can keep you comfortable.

Repair or Replace

Tuesday, August 4th, 2015

If you live in an area of the country where you won’t suffer too much if your air conditioner breaks down, chances are you’ll choose to live without a/c until you can afford to have it repaired. But for those of us homeowners who live in the Phoenix, AZ area, we will face the decision to repair or replace at some point. How do we make that decision, though?

Ductless Air Conditioning

Tuesday, July 28th, 2015

Ductless air conditioning involves the installation of an outdoor and indoor unit, similar to a central air conditioner system. But where central air conditioning uses a fan to distribute air through the ducts, ductless systems contain all of the indoor components in an air handler mounted high on the wall or on the ceiling. These air handlers blow cool air directly into the room, which is why most homes require more than one air handler. One outdoor condenser unit can usually accommodate up to four indoor air handlers, though. However, you don’t necessarily need ductless air conditioning to fix a hot room. Your current ductwork may just need to be repaired or cleaned, which is also a service that John’s offers.

If you choose ductless air conditioning, these units deliver cooling evenly throughout your home without having any ductwork. Ductless units are often just as powerful as central a/c systems. In fact, many traditional HVAC systems that use air ducts can’t perform as well due to leaks in the ductwork. With a ductless unit, you won’t have to worry about air leaks, which means you’ll be more comfortable and enjoy lower utility bills because of the energy savings.

When you use ductless air conditioning to cool your entire home, you also have zone control, which isn’t an option with a ducted system. Each air handler has its own thermostat, which means that you get to choose the temperature in any zone of the house separately from the other areas. So if you need the bedrooms to be cooler at night, but the kitchen and living areas to be cooler during the daytime, all you have to do is adjust the temperature in those zones.

If you’d like to learn more about ductless air conditioning, Just Call John’s. We offer ductless service, as well as duct repair and inspection for homes that have ductwork.
