Air Filtration for Good Health

Tuesday, May 12th, 2015

If you suffer from respiratory problems like asthma and allergies, an air filtration system might be what you need to improve your family’s health. Air filtration is often overlooked by many homeowners. But it is a simple solution to many issues found within the home.

A home’s HVAC system needs to have unrestricted air flow in order to work properly and efficiently. An air filtration system that is clogged with dust from your home is not filtering out the harmful pollutants found in just about every home. Since your a/c unit needs to breathe well in order to keep you and your family breathing well, it’s best to take the simple actions needed to make sure you are comfortable in your home.

Remember to replace your air filter every month. Replacing the air filter allows your HVAC unit to run correctly. Clogged filters can lead to an overworked system that requires replacing sooner than necessary. A new unit can mean an expense that most homeowners simply cannot afford. If you have an electrostatic air filter, clean it once a month to optimize airflow. Electrostatic air filters don’t need to be replaced – just cleaned regularly – which saves you money, too.

Additionally, your home might be a great candidate for the installation of a whole-home air filtration system. A whole-home air filtration system cleans the air in your home by removing the particulates that often cause respiratory distress. When the air in your home is cleaner, you can breathe cleaner, healthier air. Some of the particulate matter that can be found in your home includes dust, smoke, pollen, animal dander, tobacco smoke, particles generated from combustion appliances such as ovens, and particles associated with tiny organisms like dust mites and bacteria.

If you would like to have your home checked to see how you can improve the air your family breathes every day, Just Call John’s.

3 Signs of Trouble With Your Air Conditioning

Monday, May 11th, 2015

Mesa, AZ gets as hot as anywhere in the world during summer, and the last thing you need when the temperature shoot past 100°F is an air conditioner that breaks down. The sooner you can spot a problem with your system, the more quickly it can be addressed and less chance of serious trouble when the heat starts to rise.

Summers in Phoenix

Tuesday, May 5th, 2015

Summers in Phoenix mean two things for residents: high energy use from running air conditioners and the resulting high energy bills. That’s the bad news, but the good news is that you don’t have to stress about the summer anymore!

  • Stop being afraid of opening your energy bill.
  • Even though we live in the desert, the amount of dust in your home can be reduced.
  • South and west facing rooms are often the hottest in your home.
  • You and your family can have relief from the symptoms of allergy and asthma.
  • You don’t need the thermostat set at a higher (and uncomfortably warm) temperature just to save money.

The technicians of John’s Refrigeration are trained to assess and solve these and other problems related to the cooling system of your home.

Oftentimes our customers wait until the problem is bad without realizing that we offer ongoing maintenance plans so that we can catch and fix problems before you need a new system. We want you and your family to be healthy and comfortable in your home; especially during the hot Arizona summer!

If your system is 8-10 years old or more, we can replace it for as little as $25 per week.

Just Call John’s and one of our Comfort Consultants will visit your home, evaluate the needs of your family and system, and design a plan that fits your budget. Our solutions are 100% guaranteed!

3 Tips to Help Save on Air Conditioning Bills This Summer

Monday, May 4th, 2015

Few locations in the country need air conditioning as much as the Valley of the Sun in Arizona. During the summer we can expect to have our ACs running on a regular basis throughout the day and sometimes into the evening. Any average summer can end up creating very steep utility bills from air conditioning alone.

The Sensi Wi-Fi Thermostat is Only 1 Way to Save (As seen on Sonoran Living Live)

Thursday, April 23rd, 2015

Before summer gets here, take some easy steps now to lower your utility bills.

  • Change air filters monthly. Your HVAC system has to work harder if the filter is clogged. If you tend to forget about it, replace your filter when you receive your utility bill. Or Just Call John’s to join our filter service and we’ll bring out a year’s worth of filters so you have them on hand.
  • If you have an electrostatic air filter, then you only need to clean it once a month – not replace it.
  • Replacing window screens can do a lot towards lowering utility bills. Bug screens keep out bugs, but not the heat of the sun. Installing shade screens – or calling John’s to do it for you – can save you a lot of money.
  • Consider replacing your thermostat with a Sensi Wi-Fi Thermostat. This thermostat learns your schedule and what temperature you like your house to be. You can control more than one room at a time with a wireless sensor, and even control the temperature of your house while you’re at work or on vacation.

John’s can help you with filters, shade screens, and programmable thermostats. Installing a Wi-Fi thermostat provides remote access from your smartphone, tablet, or PC, which means you’ll be able to save a lot on your energy bills

John’s also offers a free in-home evaluation can see where heat is coming into your home to determine what kinds of adjustments to your cooling system can be made.

Plants That Trigger Allergies (and how a whole home air filter can help)

Thursday, April 16th, 2015

Are you experiencing sneezing, wheezing, nasal congestion, a runny nose, or itchy, watery eyes? You might be experiencing allergies associated with the plants, flowers, grasses, trees, and weeds that are currently in bloom. While we need rain in the desert, it is making for a terrible allergy season. What can you do at your home to prevent triggering allergies? You can start by avoiding plants that trigger allergies.

What are allergies?

When you have an allergy, you have a heightened sensitivity to an allergen – a foreign substance. Common allergies include dust, pollen, and pet dander. Your body overreacts when it encounters allergens, causing the immune system to go into overdrive. When this happens, you experience runny nose, itchy, watery eyes, and other symptoms.

Arizona Plants that Trigger Allergies

Arizona, especially the Phoenix area, is a place where native and non-native plants that trigger allergies exist together. If you can avoid some of these, you will experience fewer allergy symptoms. Native plants include a species of ambrosia called triangle lead bursage, mesquite, and Palo Verde. Non-native olive, white mulberry, Russian thistle, and common grasses including Bermuda, fescue, and perennial rye all trigger allergies.

Tips for Dealing with Allergies

Being uncomfortable during allergy season is bad enough, but if allergens in your home are causing you to sneeze, have itchy eyes, or experience other symptoms, it’s time to make a change.

  • Keep the house at a normal level of humidity to keep allergens like dust mites from reproducing.
  • Close windows and doors during high pollen days.
  • Obey the no-burn days.
  • Avoid down comforters and pillows.
  • Replace carpeting with tile or laminate flooring.
  • Take shoes off at the door so you’re not tracking dust, dirt, and other contaminants into the home.
  • Keep pets off your bed or out of bedrooms.
  • Regularly bathe pets to cut back on allergy inducing dander.

At John’s Refrigeration, we often recommend installing a whole home air filter that will decrease the dust, pollen, and other contaminants in the home. Kitchen and pet odors will be nearly non-existent and the air in your will be clean and allergen free. Just Call John’s today to learn more.

Ways to Raise Awareness about Allergy & Asthma Awareness Month

Thursday, April 9th, 2015

May is the height of allergy season, making it the perfect time for Allergy & Asthma Awareness Month. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America promotes the education and increased awareness of allergies and asthma across the nation. Their mission is to help communities understand the impact of environmental and food allergies to their citizens.

While John’s Refrigeration isn’t an expert on food allergies, we know a few things about creating a healthy environment in the home. Dust, pollen, dirt, and other contaminants can make it a struggle for many people to be outside. We make it our mission to help our customers breathe easy in their homes.

Did you know….the air in your home can be dirtier than the air outside?

It’s true. Your home can actually suffer symptoms of difficulty breathing, a sort of asthma attack inside the home. This occurs when the ducts are not sealed properly and/or when you’re not using a properly sized air filter. These conditions cause the system to work harder – breathe heavier. You see the effect of this extra effort in the form of higher utility bills.

What can you do to treat the asthma of your home?

The simple answer is to Just Call John’s. Our team of certified technicians will come to your home, assess the current system, make recommendations for repairs and upgrades, and get your home breathing easy. We also perform valuable services to make sure your home is breathing easier:

  • Test Indoor Air Quality to understand if there are allergens and contaminants making you or your family feel less than healthy.
  • Perform an Energy Audit to determine where your home is costing you money and energy efficiency.
  • Join the Peak Performance Club, which provides annual maintenance to the entire system of your home. We can catch repairs before they become replacements.

Raise awareness about Allergy & Asthma Awareness Month this May when you Just Call John’s to have the air in your home tested. Here’s to your health and comfort!

3 Reasons to Schedule Spring Air Conditioning Maintenance

Monday, April 6th, 2015

If you’ve lived in Arizona for a year or more, you know how blistering hot it grows during the summer. Many of the other parts of the year can reach extremely high temperatures, but summer is the season when we need to be the most mindful of our air conditioning systems. If you head into the hottest time of the year with an AC that isn’t adequately prepared, it can mean serious trouble. The best way to know that you are ready for the season is to schedule regular air conditioning maintenance from professionals in the spring. Experienced air conditioning technicians will see that your cooling system is tuned-up, adjusted, and any necessary repairs taken care of before the serious heat begins.

To schedule maintenance with Mesa, AZ cooling professionals, call Johns Refrigeration today. We have served the area with superb air conditioning service since 1970.

These are 3 reasons you should always arrange for spring AC maintenance:

  • Avoid surprise breakdowns: The strain of an Arizona summer can push an AC to it limits, and if a system hasn’t received regular attention to reduce wear and tear, the heavy heat may cause it to break down—the last thing you want to happen during one of the hottest days of the year! Maintenance technicians will clean and adjust the air conditioner and catch any potential repair issues to make sure there is little chance the system will abruptly collapse during the season.
  • Long lifespan: An air conditioner comes with a manufacturer’s estimated service life. But unless the AC receives regular maintenance to lower the effects of age, it will probably not reach this goal. To prevent scheduling a premature and expensive replacement of your air conditioning system, make sure professionals inspect it and tune it up once a year.
  • Maintain energy efficiency: Each year that an AC goes without routine maintenance, it will start to lose energy efficiency and cost more to run. It only takes a few years for a high efficiency 16 SEER system to plummet down to an inefficient 12 SEER system, which will lead to a significant increase in your cooling bills. If you have annual maintenance, you can expect the AC to retain 95% of its energy efficiency through most of its (long) life.

Johns Refrigeration offers an excellent maintenance program to take care of your air conditioner in Mesa, AZ this spring—and every spring after it.

Our Peak Performance Club provides you with two 51-point inspections per year, one for your heater and one for your air conditioner. Membership also provides you with other benefits: call us today to find out more.

How Duct Sealing can improve Your Air Conditioning

Monday, March 23rd, 2015

Ductwork is what makes centralized air conditioning possible. Without ducts, you would likely be stuck using fans and opening windows in order to cool your home on hot days. Though they are very important to the operation of central air conditioning systems, ducts are almost always neglected when it comes to required maintenance.

Let’s take a look at one of the biggest problems that ducts face, and how duct sealing can take care of it for you.

Duct Leaks

Ducts may seem pretty unlikely to develop any serious issues over the years. After all, they don’t have any moving parts. They just kind of sit there, providing a passage for cool air to travel to its destination. What could possibly happen to cause a major duct problem? Well, the biggest problems that ducts face is that of leaks, and they can happen all sorts of ways.

Improper installation can leave large gaps between the sections of ductwork. Animals can occasionally get into the ducts and tear holes in them trying to escape. Excessive moisture can cause sections of the duct to rust away, opening holes in the network. Even normal use can result in leaks, as the ducts expand and contract with the temperature of the air moving through them. This can eventually cause them to work themselves loose.

So, why are duct leaks such a big deal? Even though duct leaks are often small, they tend to add up very quickly. The US Department of Energy has estimated that the average forced air system loses as much as 30% of its output to duct leaks. That translates to a very large amount of the air conditioning that you’re paying for going to waste every time you turn the system on.

Duct Sealing

Duct sealing is the process of finding and closing any leaks that may be present in your home’s ducts. By doing this, your HVAC technician can save you hundreds of dollars a year on your electric bill. The better sealed your ducts are, the more efficient your air conditioning system will be. It is recommended that you have your ducts professionally sealed at least once every two years.

If you haven’t had your ducts sealed in at least that long, call Johns Refrigeration. We provide air conditioning services throughout the Gilbert area.

How Duct Sealing can Improve Your Quality of Life

Friday, February 20th, 2015

When a heating or air conditioning system develops a problem, you usually notice it right away.

Weird sounds start coming from the unit, efficiency decreases, something starts smoking or icing over, etc. etc. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case with ducts. Duct issues are silent, subtle, and often go completely unnoticed by the homeowner. That doesn’t make them trivial, however. Let’s take a look at one of the biggest problems that ducts are afflicted with, and how duct sealing can solve it.

Duct Leaks

Ductwork is really susceptible to leaks, and the sad fact of the matter is there isn’t much to be done to prevent them. Most ducts are installed poorly, leaving gaps between the sections. Even properly installed ducts can work themselves loose through normal operation, expanding and contracting over time. In humid environments, there’s the added problem of moisture causing corrosion and opening holes in the ducts. To make matters worse, even small duct leaks can really add up.

The US Department of Energy has estimated that the average home heating system loses as much as 30% of its output to leaks in the ductwork. Nearly a third of your heating or air conditioning output could be wasted before it gets to its destination, and you very likely wouldn’t even realize that it’s happening.

Duct Sealing

In an effort to address the massive issue that duct leaks present, duct sealing has become a common service. Basically, duct sealing consists of finding and closing any leaks that are present to improve energy efficiency. The HVAC technician conducting the service uses a number of specialized tools to address any possible kind of duct leak. While some homeowners may attempt to seal their own ducts, they often lack the materials and expertise to do the job properly. Duct sealing can also improve your air quality by preventing moisture from entering your ducts and causing mold growth. You should have your ducts sealed at least once every two years, in order to prevent wasted energy.

If you haven’t had your ducts sealed in a while, call Johns Refrigeration. We provide ductwork sealing services throughout Chandler, AZ.
