The Best Way To Clean A/C Coils

You may have heard the commercial on the radio about how they clean coils. Interesting topic. Maybe you’ve had another air conditioning company tell you that you need your coils professionally cleaned and then watched as they proceeded to wash the outside unit down with a hose. You could have done that yourself! But DON’T DO IT! Maybe they spray your unit with an acid that will shorten the life of your system.Neither way is good. There is a proper way to clean a/c coils and we know how to do it the right way. (more…)

There’s nothing better than being able to come home and cool off at home after being out on a sunny, September day. If your system isn’t cooling down your house the way it should, or if it’s running constantly, there may be a problem with it. These are obvious signs you need system needs attention. Many issues aren’t so easy to detect.

The best time do air conditioning maintenance is before your system is broken. If you’re already a member of our Peak Performance Club, then you don’t have to worry. Twice a year, we come out and check your system to ensure it’s not just working, but performing its best.

Cleaning the coils ensure air continues to flow through the system efficiently. Good airflow equals more comfortable rooms and lower utility bills.

Peak Performance Club Benefits

Tuesday, June 9th, 2015

Preventing your air conditioning unit from breaking down can save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in repair costs or to replace your unit. John’s offers an annual a/c maintenance membership that allows you to know you will be comfortable in your home all year long. By giving your HVAC unit some preventive TLC, you can rest assured it’s not going to break down when our desert temperatures start heating up to 110+ degrees. Joining our Peak Performance Club also means your unit will last longer and the service keeps it running no matter what the temperature outside is.

When our NATE Certified technicians come out to inspect your unit, we don’t just check to make sure it’s running, we can also identify safety and health issues. A few of the Peak Performance Club Annual Maintenance Membership features include:

  • Two 51–point inspections
  • Clean indoor and outdoor coils, which maintains proper airflow and prevents issues to compressor valves.
  • Clear condensate to prevent mold formation and avoid water damage.
  • Priority service: You receive service first and ahead of non–club members (very important if your a/c stops working during monsoon).
  • Improved efficiency, which saves you money on your utility bills.

Although the cost of the annual membership is only $199.95, the actual value of this service is $574. You can think of the investment as only $17 a month.

Now that it’s already heating up outside, it’s also important to remember that houses breathe, so doors and vents should be kept open. Shutting interior doors and closing vents in unused rooms doesn’t allow your home to breathe the way it needs to for optimal efficiency.

If you’d like more tips on keeping cool this summer or would like to join our Peak Performance Club, Just Call John’s!

Is it possible to have ice on your air conditioner unit in the Arizona summer?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2014

It’s hard to believe, but the quick answer is YES! There can be ice on your air conditioning unit in the Arizona summer. This is never a good thing, though, and is an indicator of a problem.

Some of the causes of ice on an air conditioner include:

  1. Low refrigerant. Your air conditioning unit requires refrigerant to operate effectively. It cycles through the coils and valves to cool the air. When refrigerant is low, pressure in the coils drops and ice forms, causing the system to work harder to cool your home.
  2. Dirty filter. Just as we breathe, so does your home. A dirty air filter is like having an allergy or asthma attack; the air is restricted, causing the coil to drop below freezing. The result is that ice forms and the system is forced to work harder.
  3. Non-functioning fan. If the fan is not functioning properly, that means air is not being circulated through the ductwork of the home. This can also cause ice to form on the unit.

What can be done to prevent this from happening?

Annual maintenance of the air conditioning unit and entire HVAC system will ensure the system is working properly and efficiently. It is our goal for our customers to enjoy comfortable temperatures in their homes.

Consider joining the Peak Performance Club, where we will perform TWO 51-point inspections, clean indoor and outdoor coils, and clear condensate.

What if you find ice on your air conditioner?

You may see ice on the unit, hear what sounds like ice dropping in the unit, or experience a change in the temperature of your home. If this happens, turn off the unit and call the team at John’s Refrigeration.

We look forward to helping keep your family home clean and healthy.

How does a dust storm affect my air conditioning?

Wednesday, July 23rd, 2014

The official monsoon season started in Arizona on June 15th and lasts through September. Often, along with rain, comes a dust storm; the worst of which is referred to as a haboob. In addition to causingallergies that drain your health, these storms can take a drain on your air conditioning unit.

How does a dust storm affect my air conditioning?

Much like our bodies, an air conditioner runs slower when there is dust and debris in the air. When the air is heavier, we get more tired doing our everyday tasks. We feel sluggish and need to exert more to accomplish the same activity. It’s the same for your air conditioning.

A typical monsoon storm begins with heavy winds, bringing dust across the Valley and into your home. Dirt enters the air conditioning unit, making the coil dirty, which reduces the unit’s performance. That means the unit is working harder and using more electricity to bring your home to the desired cool temperature. As a result, you will have a higher utility bill or may need additional maintenance to keep the unit clear of dust and debris.

How can I keep my air conditioning unit healthy during a dust storm?

Improving indoor air quality isn’t just for monsoon; it needs to happen throughout the year. At John’s Refrigeration we can:

  • Identify areas of the HVAC system where there are leaks that are allowing dust, pollen, and other contaminants into the home.
  • Install an electrostatic air filter that attracts and holds airborne particles so they do not enter your home or your lungs.
  • Clear the air conditioning unit of debris to help it work more efficiently.

The team at John’s Refrigeration is dedicated to helping families feel comfortable in their homes, during dust storm season and throughout the year. Call us today to learn how we can help keep your air conditioning running efficiently.

It’s the summer in Phoenix so it must be monsoon season!

Tuesday, July 15th, 2014

Late June and early July bring hotter temperatures and humidity to the Arizona desert in the form ofmonsoon. Marked by rainfall, high winds, and dust storms, Arizona receives half its annual rainfall during this season. While some might argue whether it is a monsoon by the strictest definition, we know for certain the rainfall brings added humidity that affects air conditioning units.

Dust, pollen, and other contaminants can strain your air conditioning unit, making it work less efficiently. The unit may, for example, run longer than normal due to the added humidity in the air. We’re not used to the moisture in the air and often lower the thermostat of an already taxed system just to stay comfortable.

How can we make sure the air conditioner works efficiently during monsoon season?

  • Clean the unit’s condensate drain of debris so it can operate efficiently.
  • Hose down the condenser coil after you turn off the electricity to the outdoor unit. The cleaner the coil, the more efficiently the hot air can be cooled.
  • Change the filter on a regular basis so the house can breathe. Yes, your home breathes much like we do. If the air is dirty or the filter is clogged, the system will pull in dirty air from the outside to the inside of your home.
  • Make sure the ductwork is sealed to prevent dust and debris from entering the home.

The most important thing you can do to keep your air conditioner running efficiently during monsoon is to have an annual maintenance check completed. At John’s Refrigeration, we offer the Peak Performance Club to keep your system running efficiently and keep you comfortable in your home. Contact us today to learn more.

Have a cleaner home with an air conditioning install

Tuesday, July 8th, 2014

You come home from a day of work and your house is warm.

You turn the thermostat down, but it’s just not cool enough.

It’s the summer and you’re feeling the heat in your own home.

At John’s Refrigeration, we believe in helping our customers maintain a comfortable home at an affordable price. We offer our Peak Performance Club to maintain the health of your air conditioning system through the hot Arizona summers. For as much maintenance as we can do, there will come a time when you will need a new unit.

While an air conditioning install is a big cost, there is one big advantage – a cleaner home!

A new air conditioning unit brings a cooler, quieter, more energy efficient home.

There’s no need to worry if your home is cool when you get home from a long day.

There’s no need to constantly turn the thermostat down to keep the house comfortable.

And most importantly, an efficient system means less housework.

When the team at John’s Refrigeration installs a new air conditioner, we check the entire system to be sure it is running at top efficiency. This includes checking the ductwork for leaks, installing the proper size ducts and air returns, and making sure the air filter is the right size for the unit. It’s how we help our customers stay cool through the hot summer.

When your home is sealed properly after an air conditioning install, you can rest assured the air in your home is healthy. You will have to clean less because dust, pollen, and contaminants are outside the home where they belong. This means less dusting and vacuuming and more time to spend with family and friends. To learn more, please contact us today.

Air Conditioning Repair in Gilbert AZ: Heat wave problems that could have been prevented

Thursday, June 12th, 2014

With temperatures already reaching over 110, a/c units in need of repair are starting to strain to cool our homes. If there’s another heat wave like we had during 2013, things could get even worse. Before you need to call John’s Refrigeration Heating and Cooling for your air conditioning repairs in Gilbert, AZ this summer, consider preventive maintenance so that you and your family are cool all summer long.

In the Southwestern United States in late June/early July last year, seven people died in the Arizona desert from dehydration and exhaustion due to the intense heat when temperatures hit 120°. In fact, it was so hot here that tigers at the Phoenix zoo were served frozen fish treats and butterflies were found collapsed on the pavement due to the high temperatures. Mesquite trees even close their leaves to protect themselves during extended periods of extreme heat, though mesquites are native to the desert.

Keeping you’re a/c unit maintained means you won’t have to worry about it shutting down when temperatures rise to uncomfortable levels. Although it’s great to have a reliable HVAC company like John’s to call when you need a/c repairs or even a new unit, it would be even better if you didn’t need to call them at all and could just not even worry about problems like your air conditioning not working.

If you are not fond of frozen fish treats and you prefer not to collapse on burning pavement, perhaps you should think about calling John’s Refrigeration to make sure your HVAC unit is running at maximum efficiency. Even our name sounds refreshing with temperatures this high.
