Mesa Arizona is a Tree City USA Community

Friday, April 25th, 2014

We are pleased to be part of the Mesa Arizona community for many reasons, including that they have been named a Tree City USA Community by the Arbor Day Foundation.

What is Arbor Day?

Arbor Day was established in April 1872 by J. Sterling Morton, a Nebraska journalist and politician. He felt Nebraska’s landscape and economy would benefit from the planting of trees. Today, all 50 states, as well as many countries around the globe, celebrate Arbor Day by planting trees and educating people on the uses of trees.

How is Mesa Arizona, a Tree City US Community, celebrating Arbor Day?

This year, we celebrate Arbor Day on April 25th. As a Tree City USA, Mesa has the ability to improve community urban forests and educate on the importance of trees for communities and the environment. Join neighbors at 9:30am on Arbor Day at the Botanical Walk at 9320 E. McKellips Rd., where Zaharis Elementary students will assist in the planting of trees.

Summer Activity Sign-Ups for Mesa

Thursday, April 24th, 2014

Need Ideas for Mesa Summer Activities?

It’s April and that means school is nearing the end for the kids in Mesa. Are you ready for summer activity sign-ups? Keep the kids busy, and the parents sane, with these activities:

Boredom Busters Program

The City of Mesa is sponsoring a variety of summer programs for kids of all ages. For example, the Boredom Busters Program is for children entering first through seventh grade in the 2014-2015 school year. Participants will experience a variety of activities, including crafts, games, PE skills, movies, and swimming. Visit the City of Mesa website for more information.

Swimming Lessons

One of the saddest parts of having swimming pools in most Mesa area yards, are the stories of the children who drown or nearly drown. To prevent an accident like this, it is important your children learn to swim. Classes are being offered by the City of Mesa throughout the summer for a variety of age groups. Visit the City of Mesa website for more information.

Rulers of the Prehistoric Land, Sea, and Sky 4 Day Camp

For those who need a shorter commitment for summer activities, this Arizona Museum of Natural History-sponsored four day camp is perfect for you! Subjects include an overview of paleontology, meet and greet with a paleontologist, learning about fossils, dinosaurs, and other prehistoric creatures.

A variety of summer activity sign-ups for Mesa are happening throughout April and May. A busy kid is a kid who stays out of trouble and gains the added education, even when they’re not in school. Where will your kids be this summer?

Ways to Observe Earth Day Mesa, AZ

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2014

Today is Earth Day Mesa!

At John’s Refrigeration, we love being eco-friendly and helping our customers make their homes more energy efficient. We’re excited the Mesa community loves being green, too, especially on April 22nd, which is Earth Day.

When Did Earth Day Begin?

The first Earth Day was celebrated April 22, 1970 by 20 million Americans. The event is now international; combining citizens, grassroots organizations, municipalities, and governments to spread the word about ways to protect the environment.

April is Valley Bike Month/Bike2Work Day

Observe Valley Bike Month when you Bike2Work on Earth Day. Stop by the north entrance of Mesa City Plaza for the Earth Day Expo. The event benefits a local charity and includes a pancake and smoothie breakfast from 6-8 am.

Celebrate Mesa

Earth Day is about bringing communities together. Join your Mesa neighbors on April 26th and Celebrate Mesa. The event takes place 2 – 6 pm at Pioneer Park and includes fun for all ages. Bounce houses, carnival rides, food vendors, and tethered balloon rides are just a few of the fun things planned.

Water Awareness

April is Water Awareness Month. Join Mesa Mayor Scott Smith in the Water Awareness Campaign by pledging to conserve water and other natural resources. Learn ways to save water on landscaping with the tips offered on the Water Awareness website, including ways homeowners can receive rebates for removing grass and opting for eco-friendly landscaping options.

If we each do one small thing, we can change the world. April is a great time to learn ways to conserve resources and become more energy efficient. The team at John’s Refrigeration is passionate about helping you stay comfortable and energy efficient in and around your home.

Take me out to the Cactus League Spring Training!

Monday, March 17th, 2014

One of the best reasons to be in the Valley in March is for Major League Baseball’s Cactus League Spring Training. Since 1947, teams have been arriving to practice for the regular baseball season. Back then it was only the Cleveland Indians and then-NY-now-San Francisco Giants; both teams still play here. Join friends and family for America’s pastime where you can see your favorite and up-and-coming players up close while enjoying the Arizona weather.

What makes Spring Training a great event?

  • It’s fun for the whole family.
  • Good excuse to leave work early.
  • Reward employees with an afternoon out of the office.
  • See players vie for spots on your favorite teams.
  • 15 teams play across the Valley.

Tips for making your Cactus League experience memorable:

  • Arrive early to get optimal parking and a chance for player autographs.
  • Wear sunscreen and a hat.
  • Lawn seats are an affordable option –  especially for families.
  • If you’re on the lawn, bring a blanket.
  • Don’t forget your glove to catch foul balls and home runs.
  • Have fun!

The Cactus League Spring Training games are an opportunity to spend time with friends and family while enjoying America’s pastime. Grab a hot dog and enjoy the game!

Why Arizona Doesn’t Have Daylight Savings Time

Sunday, March 9th, 2014

On Sunday March 9, 2014, most of the nation will spring their clocks forward one hour to Daylight Savings Time (DST). The only area of Arizona that will change its clocks is the Navajo Nation. The rest of us will stay the same time.

Do you know why Arizona doesn’t have Daylight Savings Time? It has to do with our summer weather.

DST started with an energy conservation effort by the US government more than 100 years ago. The increase of sunlight over the summer months means families have to spend less money on utilities. They can keep lights off for longer because the sun is shining until 9 or 10 pm.

This works great if summer weather isn’t as extreme as what we experience in the desert. If we had Daylight Savings Time, the sun would come up at 6:30 am instead of 5:30 am. The sun would set at 9pm instead of 8pm. That means more time awake in the summer heat.

There have been periods of time when Arizona changed its clocks but it didn’t go over well. People wanted time to be able to do personal activities like drive-in movies, nighttime golf, and spend time outside without the sun beating down on them. As a result, Arizona requested and received an exemption to daylight savings time from the US government.

Remember, if you’re calling East after March 9th, they’re three hours ahead of us. We’re the same time as the Pacific coast until November when the clocks fall back an hour. Enjoy your summer evenings and stay cool through the heat of the summer.

Give the team at John’s Refrigeration a call to schedule maintenance on your A/C before it gets too hot.

Clothing Drive Fundraiser for Gilbert Charity

Friday, January 17th, 2014

Being a business in Gilbert for 44 years means having a responsibility to our community. At John’s Refrigeration, we consider it our honor to be active in improving the Gilbert community. As part of this responsibility, Andrew John and his Gilbert Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class are raising money for the Page Commons Senior Housing Development garden restoration project and invite you to help.

The Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class is a diverse group of individuals who learn about Gilbert’s government, social services, and local business so that they may become stronger community leaders. This year’s class has selected Page Commons Senior Housing, a development of 100 affordable apartments in Gilbert, as the beneficiary of their class fundraising project. With the proceeds, the senior housing development will restore their gardens just in time for spring!

Here’s how you can help. We will be collecting:

  • Used Clothes, including Shoes, Belts, and Hats—even Socks!
  • Bedding such as Pillows, Comforters, and Linens
  • Towels
  • Backpacks and Purses
  • Draperies
  • Stuffed Animals

It’s the perfect time to lighten the load, get a head start on your spring-cleaning, and contribute to this terrific cause.

What happens to the items collected? Clothing Cycle pays for every pound you bring in. Textiles are turned into useable secondhand clothing or become wiping rags for commercial and industrial use. Some items are recycled into fibers to make everyday products like carpet padding, upholstery, and insulation.

Drop off your used household items at the Gilbert Chamber of Commerce on January 25th from 8 AM to 2 PM.

Gilbert Chamber of Commerce

119 N Gilbert Road

Gilbert, AZ 85233

Cash prize for the person who brings in the most pounds! Everyone who brings over 50 pounds gets a chance at having a pizza party with former Arizona Cardinals players!

Bring your USED clothes and help Andrew and his Gilbert Chamber of Commerce Leadership class raise money to benefit the Garden Restoration Project at Page Commons Senior Housing Development. Thank you!
