Safe Proofing Your Home for Monsoon

August 25th, 2015

Safe Proof Your Home for Monsoon

Arizona’s monsoon is June 15th through September 30th, so we are already officially into what is not only the hottest time of the year here in the Valley of the Sun, but also the most humid. In fact, the Arizona Division of Public Health Services describes the heat in Arizona during the summer as “more than a nuisance”; they consider it to be lethal.

There are several things you can do in order to safe proof your home for monsoon, including securing patio furniture and umbrellas so that they don’t blow away or become damaged. The strong winds can even blow your outdoor furniture and ornaments into your home’s windows or your vehicles if they are not properly stored or secured. Trash cans, children’s play sets, trampolines, sheds, window screens, and loose roof tiles or shingles should also be checked to ensure they survive monsoon.

Young trees should be secured and mature trees can be trimmed in order to prevent damage to them or to your property. Large trees routinely fall during monsoon; falling onto homes, vehicles, and neighbors’ properties. Be sure to thin out heavier branches on larger trees and make sure branches aren’t touching your house or roof. Surge protectors are essential to protect your electronic devices and should be considered an investment when safe proofing your home for monsoon. Since a higher number on the surge protector indicates greater protection, look for one that is at least rated at 200 to 400 joules.

Your home’s HVAC system filters the outside air, so the dust storms that accompany monsoon can strain your unit, making it work harder and less efficiently. Because the a/c unit may run longer than normal due to the higher humidity, you may need to lower the thermostat setting in order to keep comfortable. 77° in a home with 50% humidity is not comfortable. Cleaning the unit’s condensate drain will also help keep your HVAC system clean and clear out any debris, which makes the unit more efficient.

Our HVAC inspections can easily become one of the items you schedule when safe proofing your home for monsoon. Just Call John’s if you would like our NATE-Certified technicians to check your a/c unit in order to get through monsoon with your air conditioner still working.

What Happens During an Energy Audit?

August 24th, 2015

In some ways, your home is like a living organism, with different systems working in conjunction to provide you with running water, electrical power, and a pleasant environment with air conditioning and indoor air quality products. Like a biological organism, your home consumes energy to keep those systems operating, and that energy consumption can cost you quite a bit if you’re not careful. Here in Mesa, AZ, that’s particularly important since our summers are so brutally hot. An energy audit is designed to address that issue in a comprehensive way. Instead of treating one individual system, it looks at your whole house in search of applicable solutions. What happens during an energy audit? Here’s a brief breakdown:Continue Reading

Why Can’t You Just Recharge Low Refrigerant Levels?

August 17th, 2015

Most people know that air conditioners run on refrigerant, a chemical combination that encompasses a number of specific names and formulas. The specific type and amount of gas depends on the make and model of your air conditioner, but all refrigerant has a few things in common: a relatively low vaporization point, an ease of shifting from liquid to gaseous form and back, and the ability to pull heat energy from the nearby air in the process. It’s what makes air conditioning possible, and has proven to be a revolutionary technology in hot cities like Mesa, AZ. Continue Reading

AC Appreciation Days

August 11th, 2015

Appreciate your A/C!

National Air Conditioning Appreciation Days are July 3rd to August 15th this year. Air conditioning was invented in 1932 by Willis Carrier and has become a necessity for most of us in the US. Heat stroke, heat rash, heat edema, heat cramps, dehydration, and heat exhaustion can occur if we are exposed to excessive heat and humidity for a prolonged period of time.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, more than 9,000 Americans have suffered heat-related deaths since 1979. And the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality state about 6,200 Americans are hospitalized each summer due to complications from excessive heat. The European heat wave of 2003 caused more than 20,000 deaths because of heat related illnesses.

Appreciate your air conditioner by taking care of it; your health may depend on it.

• Change the air filter every month
• Set the thermostat at 80 degrees while you are away
• Or better yet, install a programmable thermostat
• Turn off lights in rooms you aren’t using
• Keep your blinds or shades down
• Use ceiling fans in occupied rooms

Just Call John’s if you need to have us make sure your air conditioner is running efficiently. There’s no time like appreciating air conditioning when it breaks down. We can help make sure that doesn’t happen.

3 Types of Air Filtration Systems

August 10th, 2015

Mesa, AZ gets super-hot in the summertime, and most of us rightfully focus on our air conditioners to keep our homes comfortable. But frankly speaking, indoor air quality can be as much of a problem: anything from low humidity to the presence of germs and bacteria can lower the quality of your air and subsequently the quality of your life. You can fight it by installing an air filtration system in your home, which can address specific issues or a variety of them to help make the air fresher and healthier. But which one is right for you? You can answer that question with help from a professional technician, but here are 3 different types of air filtration systems to give you an idea of your options. Continue Reading

3 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Air Conditioner

Summers in Mesa, AZ are as hot as they come, with temperatures often climbing into the triple digits. The good news is that a reliable air conditioner can keep your home cool and comfortable. The bad news is that you often have to pay a great deal in high bills for the privilege. That can sometimes disguise the fact that you’re paying more than you need to. Here are 3 ways to get the most out of your air conditioner. Continue Reading

Ductless Air Conditioning

July 28th, 2015

Ductless air conditioning involves the installation of an outdoor and indoor unit, similar to a central air conditioner system. But where central air conditioning uses a fan to distribute air through the ducts, ductless systems contain all of the indoor components in an air handler mounted high on the wall or on the ceiling. These air handlers blow cool air directly into the room, which is why most homes require more than one air handler. One outdoor condenser unit can usually accommodate up to four indoor air handlers, though. However, you don’t necessarily need ductless air conditioning to fix a hot room. Your current ductwork may just need to be repaired or cleaned, which is also a service that John’s offers.

If you choose ductless air conditioning, these units deliver cooling evenly throughout your home without having any ductwork. Ductless units are often just as powerful as central a/c systems. In fact, many traditional HVAC systems that use air ducts can’t perform as well due to leaks in the ductwork. With a ductless unit, you won’t have to worry about air leaks, which means you’ll be more comfortable and enjoy lower utility bills because of the energy savings.

When you use ductless air conditioning to cool your entire home, you also have zone control, which isn’t an option with a ducted system. Each air handler has its own thermostat, which means that you get to choose the temperature in any zone of the house separately from the other areas. So if you need the bedrooms to be cooler at night, but the kitchen and living areas to be cooler during the daytime, all you have to do is adjust the temperature in those zones.

If you’d like to learn more about ductless air conditioning, Just Call John’s. We offer ductless service, as well as duct repair and inspection for homes that have ductwork.
