Ways to Save Energy You Might Not Have Heard Before

Ways to Save Energy

Summer is quickly approaching. Here in the Arizona desert, that means higher utility bills as we try to keep our homes cool enough to keep us comfortable. We all know that setting the thermostat a few degrees higher helps reduce the energy costs we all face. Replacing your thermostat with a programmable thermostat can save you even more. Sealing and caulking around windows and doors is among the easiest and least expensive ways to keep the cool air in our home instead of cooling the outdoors. But here are a few ways to save energy you might not have heard before:

  • Turn off kitchen and bath exhaust fans. Use them while taking a shower and cooking, but remember to turn them off afterwards.
  • Block the sun from entering your home by using shades, blinds and drapes.
  • Plant trees to provide shade on the outside of your home or use awnings to keep the sun from heating your home.
  • Open interior doors so that air conditioned air flows freely throughout your home.

Also, SRP offers free shade tree planting workshops where you receive two free shade trees. They detail how and where to plant for the best results and also make sure you know how to take care of the trees so they continue to shade your home for many years. Trees also often increase a home’s value as part of the curb appeal and landscaping of your property.

No one wants high utility bills. Doing what you can to save you money doesn’t mean you have to figure it all out yourself. Just Call John’s to see how we can help save you energy and keep your hard earned money in your pocket.

Is replacing your windows worth it?

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2015

When it comes to keeping your home cool, maintaining your home’s HVAC unit is key. An efficient unit will not only help keep your home cool and comfortable, but it can also help keep the dust out of your home, which means your home will be cleaner. Less dust also is directly related to fewer respiratory illnesses like asthma, but also annoying conditions like dry skin and bloody noses. For a/c savings, though, can replacing your windows also save you big bucks?

Most windows can actually be compared to having a giant hole in your home’s insulation. Especially if they are older, drafty windows. But new windows are expensive and installing them often costs just as much as the windows themselves. New windows aren’t the best cure for reducing your utility bills. There are easier and cheaper projects you can do, such as sealing all your home’s air leaks, which will have a bigger impact.

The energy savings from new windows don’t usually come even close to justifying their cost. And research shows that the payback period for replacement windows can be as high as 100 years. The new high-efficiency windows might offer twice the insulation value as the old single-pane windows you currently have. Which means new windows would cut your energy loss through the windows by as much as 50%. But some studies reveal only about 30% of your house’s heating and air conditioning disappears out the windows.

Before deciding to replace your windows for a/c savings, Just Call John’s to see what we can do to help you reduce your utility bills. John’s doesn’t just repair and replace HVAC units, we also offer a service that replaces the screens on your windows. We have thermostats that you can control even when you’re not at home. Check out one of our recent appearances on Sonoran Living Live where owner Andrew John talks about some of the options available for a/c savings.

Consider a Humidifier to Help with Allergies

Thursday, March 12th, 2015

How Can Humidifiers Help Your Allergies?

Do you suffer from allergies living in Arizona? You’re not alone. The heat and lack of humidity causes dry sinuses and skin, pressure, pain, and bloody noses. Humidifiers can help and here’s how:

What’s humidity?

It’s the amount of moisture in the air. When it rains and the air feels “sticky” or heavy, you’re feeling humidity and it’s needed to keep sinuses moist and functioning in a healthy way. When the air is too dry, you’re more susceptible to getting sick, having bloody noses, and feeling sinus pressure. Using a humidifier, even just one used at night, can help you feel relief from these symptoms.

Types of Humidifiers:

  • Steam vaporizers like the ones you may use when you or your children are sick boil the water into a cold or warm vapor. Vaporizers keep sinuses moist throughout the night to prevent bloody noses and coughing.
  • Impellar humidifiers rotate disks, flinging water into a cool fog.
  • Ultrasonic humidifiers use frequency vibration to create droplets of cool water.
  • Wick systems use a fabric wick to draw water from the reservoir while a fan blows the vapor into the air. These self-regulate depending on the amount of humidity in the air.
  • Whole Home Humidifiers are built into a home’s HVAC unit, keeping humidity at equal levels throughout the home at all times of the day and throughout the year.

In addition to humidifiers, we recommend the following to decrease allergens found in your home:

  • Pollen can aggravate allergies. If you spend a lot of time outside, we recommend taking your clothes off right when you enter the home, rather than tracking pollen, dust, and other contaminants through the house.
  • Take off your shoes at the door. Leaving shoes at the door when you enter means less allergens are brought from the outside and spread throughout your home.
  • Less carpet, more wood and tile flooring. While you might like the soft, warm carpet under your feet, it’s one of the worst things to have in your home, especially if you have allergies or asthma, because it holds dirt, dust, pet dander, and other allergens.

Just Call John’s at 480-718-1172 to learn how we can help you decrease allergens and increase humidity in your home with humidifiers.

Should we try what China is doing by fighting pollution?

Wednesday, November 26th, 2014

It has recently been reported that China has designs for towers that will filter air and water in highly populated and polluted cities. At the base of the towers are greenhouses that could, at least in theory, grow vegetation, including fruits and vegetables, throughout the year. It sounds good in theory, but should we try what China is trying by fighting pollution?

Maybe. Maybe not.

At this point, it’s just theory and a set of drawings. We, including China, don’t know if the tower will be worth the resources spent to create it. Resources that include the environment.

In order to make space for new towns and suburbs, engineers are suggesting that the tops of mountains would need to be sliced off in order to fill the valleys caused by the construction of the immense towers. That in and of itself has environmental implications beyond fighting pollution, including what would happen to the wildlife and ecosystem of these mountainous areas.

China’s air pollution is reportedly so bad that it is often compared to a nuclear winter. Crops are damaged and there is a real threat to their food supply. They, rather than the U.S., might be more likely to build the air and water filter towers.

Should we try what China is trying by fighting pollution?

Let’s look at the viability of creating a monstrous tower. In densely populated cities like New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles, we would have to destroy private and public land to even have space for this type of tower. That alone would have environmental and political implications.

While there are places in the U.S. with poor air quality, no area comes close to a nuclear winter. So is it worth it – even if we can scrub our air and water clean – to build such a tower?

Maybe. Maybe not.

We’re not a government-controlled nation (like China) that can make blanket decisions for the people. The reality is that between politicians, businesses, and environmentalists, an air and water filtering tower is probably never going to happen.

And China hasn’t even built one yet so we don’t have a real case study to review.

Until someone else builds it, we don’t think it’s happening here. No matter how good it sounds in theory.

Become Part of the John’s Refrigeration Team!

Thursday, October 2nd, 2014

As a locally owned and operated family business, the team at John’s Refrigeration is always looking for ways to give back to the community and attract talented employees. Our own Andrew John recently appeared on 90.7/92.7 Pulse Radio to talk about his involvement with East Valley Institute of Technology (EVIT) as a member of the HVAC Advisory Committee.

John’s Refrigeration is celebrating 44 years in business. We like to say we’re born in the desert and are built to last. According to Andrew, he has been part of the business since he was old enough to climb a ladder. While that’s not far from the truth, his days in HVAC started as a student at EVIT when it was called Mesa Vo-Tech. Since that time, he has mentored and hired students to work for John’s Refrigeration.

What is it like being a technician for John’s Refrigeration?

Andrew and the team at John’s operate in an ethical and honest manner with all employees and customers: “We pay our employees to be efficient and to do the right thing.”

In other words, you can rest assured you’re not being upsold when you work with our team. Technicians are paid well for providing high quality customer care and staying up to date on training and education. For these reasons, John’s Refrigeration is a great employment opportunity for HVAC professionals.

Our goal is to give our technicians the education and training they need to provide provable solutions to our customers, including:

  • Helping the system operate more efficiently and economically
  • Providing a comfortable and safe environment for you and your family
  • Making the system last a long time

We believe in being comprehensive. While the customer may want all of the solutions today, we want to make sure they have all the information about their HVAC system.

A word about service calls.

While we wish we could provide free service calls, we do have to cover the cost of sending a technician to your house. In cases where the problem may have been misdiagnosed, we do offer a free diagnostic. We will tell you when we get to the point where we understand the problem. While we try to be comprehensive, we understand you may not want to pay for a service call, so we stop our work, providing you with the free diagnostic and estimate.

Why choose the HVAC industry?

There are always jobs in this industry. Andrew says you don’t have to worry about being laid off and can plan ahead for you and your family. Jobs start at $12-15 per hour based on experience and John’s Refrigeration offers opportunity to grow professionally and financially.

Why is Andrew John part of the HVAC Advisory Committee at EVIT?

He believes EVIT does a great job providing kids with a real world education. From this foundation, John’s Refrigeration can help them grow and learn in the HVAC industry. For more information about EVIT and John’s Refrigeration, visit www.justcalljohns.com.

John’s Red Carpet Customer Service

Monday, September 23rd, 2013

Many businesses believe that good customer service is all about bringing customers back. The approach to customer service that John’s Refrigeration Heating and Cooling takes instead is to offer stellar service – indeed, Red Carpet Service – by forming a relationship with our customers personally. Since our customer service policy is customer-centered, we discover what the customer wants, listen to the customer to solve any issues, and deliver the customer’s vision – plus one percent.

John’s understands that homeowners may have been burned before or that the product or service offered by other companies turned out to be something entirely different from what was actually delivered. Unfortunately, many customers are only satisfied because their expectations are so low and because no one else is doing better. Poor service is what they’re used to.

However, consistency will overcome resistance. We offer a different experience from our competition: We “wow” our customers by backing up what we say. John’s offers a money back guarantee, no matter what the issue is. Our customers can always be satisfied knowing that the burden is always on us. They really can’t make a bad decision…. Unless they choose someone else.

John’s is able to provide this kind of customer service through systems and training. From how to answer the phone, to how to park at a client’s home, how we introduce ourselves to customers, and how to give them a completely different experience than they are used to or expect. We focus on communication through conversation training. We reward our Certified Technicians for the individual customer service they provide. We do this with weekly meetings, weekly training, and ride-alongs to oversee customer interaction. John’s is always looking for what would help us to improve.

A perfect service call is considered the Red Carpet treatment. We literally roll out a red carpet to your front door and then put on shoe protectors so we keep your home looking the way it was during our visit, as well as after we are finished.

John’s offers a different experience from any other installation or repair service. We are an HVAC company, here to help you with all you air conditioning and heating needs, but we are first and foremost a customer service oriented business that keeps the customer front and center during the entire process.

When customers know they can count on you time and time again, that is stellar service. So make a call to John’s Refrigeration Heating and Cooling – for projects large and small – where you get a commitment, not just a response.

Air Conditioning Appreciation Week

Monday, August 12th, 2013

In honor of Air Conditioning Appreciation Week (which should be a public holiday in Mesa, AZ!) John’s Refrigeration Heating and Cooling would like to point out a few cool facts about air conditioning and why we should be grateful for a/c:

  • The first air conditioner was invented by Willis Carrier for a publishing company in 1902 in order to keep temperature and humidity low so that the paper did not expand and contract. A/C also helped ink to dry faster and smudge free.
  • The term “air conditioning” came from a North Carolina textile manufacturer in 1906 because the technology actually improved the quality and condition of the cloth being made in his plant.
  • During the Depression, movie theatres were one of the few buildings that had air conditioning, making them the coolest places in town. People would flock to theatres just so they could enjoy the cooled air. This is why movie studios started releasing their most lavish productions in the summer, creating the tradition of the summer blockbuster.
  • Before air conditioning, many businesses and industries used to slow down or even stop during the summer because the buildings were just too hot, affecting production. American workers used to get a month-long vacation in August due to these breaks and some European businesses continue this practice.
  • Air conditioning actually helps us live longer, since the cool, controllable environments in laboratories and hospitals have allowed us to create medicines that conquer malaria, inhibit bacteria, and advance developments in surgery.

Have John’s service your system at the beginning and end of each cooling season to ensure efficiency because if you treat your air conditioning unit well, it will continue to give you comfort. We want your family to be cool and comfortable all summer long and our Indoor Comfort Specialists will take the heat out of your summer.

We believe in having a green environment which means helping your HVAC system run efficiently so as not to waste resources.
